IN THIS ISSUE 🌱
Good Morning {{first_name}}!
It’s Wednesday - and that means it’s time for your Property Playbook - an issue where we dig into your CRM’s property capabilities.
I don’t think I have to explain that AI referral traffic is having a moment (LLM-sourced leads are up 1,850% year-over-year according to HubSpot's own data).
While HubSpot does fill in your lead source automatically, it doesn’t fill in everything after that, including campaigns the lead went through to close the deal. Don’t think that just because it’s an AI-referral that it’s a guaranteed close.
Let's get into it.

YOUR CRM ALREADY CATEGORIZES AI TRAFFIC ✨
FIELD SPOTLIGHT
Your account already tags the AI visit
In your “Latest Source” field (internal name: hs_analytics_latest_source), you’ll see the source that brought someone. It exists in some variation on both the company and the contact record. And if it’s AI-related, it will make a note of it.
If you go under your traffic source report, you’ll see AI listed there alongside organic, direct, and paid ads.

ESTABLISH BETTER CAMPAIGN TRACKING 🌊
THE IGNORED FIELD
The campaign field that never fills itself in
Okay, so one step complete. Now, the second field to explore is First Touch Converting Campaign (internal: hs_analytics_first_touch_converting_campaign). This field does not auto-populate.
Most people will reach straight for UTM parameters to fix this, but this won’t work. You cannot control the link an AI answer engine generates when it cites you, so the UTM path is closed for this specific channel. The Campaign association path is not.

WHAT TRULY CARRIED THE WEIGHT? ⚡
WHAT IT SIGNALS + HOMEWORK THIS WEEK
You can prove the channel, but not the asset
This gap in attribution is not a tagging problem. It’s truly an association problem that connects all of the assets in the right way, so you understand everything that played a role in the deal value - not just the AI source.
This week, pull a list of companies where Latest Traffic Source equals AI Referrals, then identify the specific pages most likely to be earning those citations (comparison pages, pillar content, pricing breakdowns). Go into the Campaigns tool and associate each of those pages with a Campaign record.
And explore those contacts’ records to see what other pages they visited while on your website. You may just find some common threads.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💡
CLOSING THE LOOP
TL;DR
Anyone who has converted an AI-sourced lead says they are three times more likely to convert. So, if this is indeed true, then ignoring AI-sourced leads and failing to understand their conversion paths can be expensive in the long run.
Fixing this is not complicated. It is just unglamorous, which is probably why nobody does it. Or maybe they haven’t thought about how to do this effectively.
How was this issue!?
P.S.
Have you actually checked your company records for AI Referrals yet, or are you taking my word for it that they are in there? Reply and let me know either way.

Until next time!
