IN THIS ISSUE 🌱

Good Morning {{first_name}}!

It’s Tuesday - which means it’s time for The Lifecycle Brief! This week, I want to dig into a new partnership. First came Claude and Salesforce. Now, it’s HubSpot and ChatGPT.

HubSpot is now the first CRM that plugs into your ChatGPT ads. As a result, ChatGPT can now pull in your lifecycle stages from your contacts. The idea is that the ad should serve to individuals based on their status in your CRM: lead, MQL, SQL, Opportunity, or Customer.

You get the drill.

What could go wrong? 👀

Let’s dive in.

PUTTING SIGNALS FIRST ✨

CRM FOUNDATIONS THAT BREAK THE SYSTEM
Stages become targeting parameters

On September 16, HubSpot and OpenAI announced an expanded partnership that would allow ChatGPT to connect to HubSpot, including tracking ads in HubSpot from your ChatGPT ad account.

In HubSpot’s release notes, it’s revealed that when a ChatGPT ad-sourced lead converts, HubSpot sends the signal back so the targeting optimizes for closed deals rather than form conversions or clicks.

In other words, ChatGPT ads match to what a person is asking in the moment. Your HubSpot helps fuel that moment and the decision based on where they may be in your pipeline.

STAGE SKIPPING IS A PROBLEM 🌊

THE PROBLEM
Two signals can’t teach much

So yes, this all sounds awesome. And if your HubSpot is set up perfectly, it would be fantastic. But the reality is that if you are only operating from a lead, opportunity, and client lifecycle, you aren’t feeding the ads enough to make decisions based on targeting.

The assumption is that this connection will close the loop. But this loop is only as good as the information feeding it.

The reality is that the connection between ad spend and CRM outcomes is unpredictable. CRM signals that are supposed to feed back into ads for performance are most likely non-existent in most HubSpot accounts, despite lifecycle stages being at a 100% fill-in rate by default.

Hiring a RevOps person to come in and clean things up? Well, this doesn’t work retroactively either.

DATA PROVIDES THE CONTEXT FOR EVERYTHING ⏳

BREAKING DOWN THE FIX
Where do we start?

If you are currently set up to only include lead and client, then you need to develop your stages a bit more. Potentially even add layers of MQL and SQL throughout your funnel.

Here are the fields to focus on:

  • Lifecycle stage

  • Date entered (stage) and date exited (stage)

  • Date entered MQL, SQL, Opportunity

  • Date entered Customer

If you’ve built conversion events inside your HubSpot, the ad platform would learn more about the user beyond the “became a lead” and “became a customer.”

🩷 HubSpot and OpenAI Deepen Partnership to Bring AI Transformation to Every SMB: The primary release. Covers the ChatGPT Ads integration and the AI Growth Bundle, including a $750 ChatGPT Ads spend match for new accounts opened by September 30. Worth flagging for readers, since that deadline lands the same week this issue goes out.

🧡 Reimagining Advertising with AI: OpenAI's side of the announcement. OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents, which let people start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad in ChatGPT. For B2B, a sponsored agent conversation is a new pre-form touchpoint your CRM will need to capture.

💛 HubSpot Becomes OpenAI's First CRM Partner for ChatGPT Ads: The measured take. Explains the consent-gated conversion data and the lack of performance evidence so far, which makes it a useful counterweight to the launch coverage.

💚 LinkedIn Marketing API: August 2026 Updates: LinkedIn added MQL and SQL conversion types to its API. This is the other half of your "two platforms in a month" point, since both now reward teams whose middle-funnel stages are actually in use.

💙 B2B Ads 2026 Playbook: When Managing Offline Conversions Becomes Essential: A real before-and-after case where CRM qualification data broke, cost per lead stayed flat, and opportunity costs climbed. It's the cautionary tale for this entire issue.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💡

CLOSING THE LOOP
TL;DR

As important as lifecycle stages are in your marketing and sales efforts, there are underlying signals that you should pay attention to and track. Build conversion events within HubSpot and use those to fuel ad performance.

The algorithm will only ever be as disciplined as your lifecycle stages, so decide what MQL means before ChatGPT decides for you.
