IN THIS ISSUE 🌱
Good Morning {{first_name}}!
It’s Fri(yay) - and that means it’s time for your Retention Play - where we talk about how to retain the revenue you’ve already worked so hard to get.
Okay, so AI search converts better. You already know that part. Here's the question I actually want to analyze this week: what happens to those contacts after they close?
Because most teams are so busy celebrating the acquisition win that the source tag disappears the second the deal does.
Let’s dive in.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE CLOSE? ✨
THE SITUATION
The close is the focus, but should it be?
Last year, I was in San Francisco at the HubSpot conference and during a session, they invited people to come up to the microphone and share what they’d like to see.
Of course, me being me - I was up there right away. I asked about retention tools. Yes, Sales Hub tracks the initial sale, but that initial sale should ideally only represent 20% of the business relationship. Retention, growth, development, innovation - how is all of that tracked?
On my way back to my chair, a gentleman tapped me on the shoulder and asked if we could talk after. Within 48 hours, he was trying to poach me. Moral of the story? Retention matters to business owners, and it should matter to you - even if your CRM isn’t designed to help you track it.
In most CRMs, once the sale happens, it ends up sitting in a Closed Won deal stage, and it rarely progresses to track anything regarding retention.

THE DREADED RETENTION GAP 🌊
THE GAP
Do you have a plan for what happens next?
Let’s go back to the topic of the week - AI-sourced leads.
A contact who spent fifteen minutes researching through ChatGPT before ever talking to sales arrived more informed than a contact who clicked a paid ad. That we know. Of course, they come in more educated and with higher intent.
That difference in intent does not vanish after the signature. It should show up in renewal rates, expansion revenue, and support ticket patterns, but almost nobody is comparing AI-sourced customers against everyone else post-sale, so that signal just gets lost in the average.
We assume that all leads should funnel through the same onboarding process, the same education process, and the same renewal period.

THINK BEYOND THE SALE⚡
THE FIX
The source reveal needs to carry more
Here’s your fix for the retention plan: Stop treating the AI-sourced property as an acquisition metric only. Keep it live through onboarding, renewal, and expansion in the CRM, and start segmenting retention reporting by source, not just pipeline reporting.
If these contacts really do convert better and stay longer, that pattern should be provable in your retention numbers too, not just your first-touch attribution.

RETENTION STRATEGY PLAY ⚡
ONE RETENTION EMAIL IDEA
Use email for retention as well
Build a separate retention track for customers whose CRM source property shows an AI referral, on the assumption that they did more homework before ever reaching out than a typical contact did.
Pull every closed-won contact tagged with an AI referral source into its own lifecycle segment, separate from your standard customer base.
Write a 1-on-1 check-in email for this segment that skips the basic education most onboarding sequences lead with, since they already did that research before you ever spoke.
Compare renewal and expansion rates for this segment against your average every quarter, so the source tag keeps earning its place in the CRM long after the deal closes.

FINAL THOUGHTS 💡
CLOSING THE LOOP
TL;DR
If a channel converts better, find out if it retains better too. Otherwise you're only proving half the story. Your customer lifetime value is often tied to how much they know and how they feel about your services and products - and how you treat them and the additional value you provide.
